Current status and challenges of radiation protection/safety education in hospitals: Analysis using the KJ method

To identify challenges related to radiation worker education through a status survey, and formulate solutions. A status survey was conducted, involving 1,883 hospitals with 200 or more beds throughout Japan, excluding those only providing psychiatric services, to collect their opinions about radiation worker education, including: challenges in providing such education, educational approaches, and suggestions to resolve these challenges in a free-description style. The obtained data were analyzed using the KJ method. The current status and challenges were explained by 10 symbols: [recognition of the importance of education], [acute awareness of one’s role as the person in charge of education], [enthusiasm for education], [little interest in radiation protection/safety education among all employees, including the facility manager], [low participation rate of facility employees], [uncooperative attitude of facility employees], [variations in topics learned in basic radiation education among professionals,resulting in differences in the level of understanding among them], [expansion of the role of the person in charge of education], [cooperation from the organization], and [support from related bodies]. The results revealed that persons in charge of radiation worker education are struggling alone, but it was thought that the driving force behind [expansion of the role of the person in charge of education], [cooperation from the organization] and [support from related bodies] would be to turn things around.
